Q: I'm a permanent resident and have not been working for the last 4 years (though I tried to find a job). I'm thinking about to call several employment agencies in Kansas City area, but I have some doubts, since I have never been employed in US and don't have experience that they might looking for. I consider myself to be helpful in the area like desktop publishing and office work (have more then enough experience working with Photoshop, MS Office products, I'm creative and very computer savy person). Would appreciate if somebody can give me some advise or share their experience. Thank you Ye I do have SSN and I'm eligible to work, in fact I'm ready to start citizenship process. I'm 30 years old.
A: If you don't have a working visa or sufficient documentation to support your "perm residency" than don't bother looking for work you won't be hired. Do you have a Social Security # and are you over 18? If so than you could work and I'd advise that you sign up with several of the "temp" agencies to get assignments. Initially you should take anything that comes up so that you can build up your experience. After a year or two of temping you may/might have a better idea of exactly what employers seek and get more education in those areas. Additionally, you'll have opportunities to sample the workplace at several firms to see what type of environment best suits you. GOOD LUCK!
